Love Story -

my favourite song at the moment, together with 沙沙的谁. enjoy while i try to at my radioblog to work. =)

the kaka wc awards ceremony

well with the world cup well behind us, i think its abt time i give my awards ceremony for the most memorable moments and players.

Traditional Awards

Golden Ball Award Fabio Cannavaro (ita) - the rock of italy's defence. numerous crucial tackles and yet no yellow or red cards awarded. what a defender shld be.

Best Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon (ita) - another crucial member of italy's squad. nv conceded a goal frm open play except for a own goal by zaccado against the us. conceded only 2 goals en route to the title. a zidane penalty and the og. truly astounding goalkeeping.

Best Defender Fabio Cannavaro (ita) - who else?

Best Midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo (por) - no other player has provided more entertainment and reason to cheer or boo than him. his dazzling stepovers and penetrative runs down the flanks caused problems for any defence. he got rooney sent off, cried when injured and substituted, and dived whenever possible. the ultimate emotion, simulation and entertainment bundle you'll ever get.

Best Striker Thierry Henry (fra) - his passes have created goals. his runs have been timed to perfection and his eye for goal has been flawless. too bad he didnt deliver on the final.

Best Coach Marcelo Lippi (ita) - his tactical insight defeated germany in the semis. his credentials at juventus have also reflected his capabilities. a master of the art of defence, he capitalised on italy's strengths and his own expertise to guide italy to the title.

Best Young Player Lucas Podolski (ger) - admitted he's nt my first choice, but in view of fair play, i'll choose him instead of cristiano ronaldo. lionel messi would have been my choice if pekerman had the sense to play him more often. his 3 goals played a role in germany's road to the semis.

Best Referee Shamsul Maidin (sin) - well of course he didnt "progress" pass the 2nd round, but he wins this award for his ability to hand out tough decisions without illiciting a protest. his refereeing has also been flawless in the group stages. recognised as the best ref by espn soccernet.

Memorable Moments

Best Goal Cambiasso's goal against serbia and montenegro - the 24 pass goal well finished by cambiasso. pure argentinian class. other contenders for this award will be torsten frings' 35 metre swerving thunderbolt in the wc opener against costa rica and philip lahm's opening goal in the same match.

Best Goal Celebration Ivan Kavendies' Spiderman - after scoring against poland i think, he pulled on a yellow spiderman mask in memory of the later ecuadorean striker otillio (sth like tt) tenerio who died in a car crash. heartwarming moment.

Most Touching Moment Kahn encouraging Lehmann b4 germany's shootout against argentina - klinsmann's decision to drop kahn in favour of lehmann for the wc didnt go down too well with kahn, but here's a moment where he puts aside his differences to encourage lehmann. a true reflection of team geist.

the bad, the weird and the crappy

Best Header Zinedine Zidane in the WC Final - well this header was nt meant for the ball but the chest of marco materazzi. the header that had him sent off in spectacular fashion. anti-climatic end to his stellar career.

Most Forgetful Graham Poll (referee, english) - i noe the croatians must look quite similar to you, but to give the same player 3 yellows b4 sending him off? a bit too absurb. next time rmb to take down the offender's name, will you?

Most Anticlimatic England - the pre tournament favourites arrived to flop in front of everyone, producing 1-0 wins b4 finally falling to portugal in a shootout. what happened to the attacking prowess of gerrard, joe cole and lampard? perhaps they left it all back home at their clubs.

Worst Decision Sven Goran Eriksson (eng) - who the hell brings only 4 strikers and a glut of midfielders to the world cup? didnt help tt one was untested, one only noes to hold the ball but cant shoot, a recovering frm injury football genius and an off-form prolific striker. when owen and rooney couldnt deliver, down goes england.

Simulation Award Cristiano Ronaldo (por) - who else but the man who throws himself so blatantly to the ground at every possible chance?

congratulations to all winners. im sure you all added more spice to this year's edition of the world cup. cya in south africa in 2010!

BOO... Zidane... BOO!

so the italians have proven me right tt they had what it took to beat france in the final. and the way the french played has proven me right they have rode their luck all the way to the final, with only rare sparks from zidane putting they through each game. so they deservedly lost to the best team in the tournament.

luck shone on france as early as the 5th min, as malouda was judged to have been brought down in the box when in fact he had charged into the body of marco materazzi i think. the referee thought otherwise and zidane stepped up to take the penalty as usual. it was also sheer luck tt zidane scored as he chipped his penalty onto the underside of the crossbar. the ball hit the ground jus over the line, bounced back up onto the crossbar and back out of the goal. if he had clipped it slightly higher, france wouldnt have been celebrating then.

and i think tt was zidane's only gd contribution to the match. after tt he was crowded out by the tough italian defence and limited his play. andrea pirlo was the man of the 1st half as his 3 corners all found italians who either headed it onto the crossbar (luca toni), into goal (marco materrazzi) or straight at the keeper (forgot who). brilliant goal frm materazzi to cancel out france's lucky lead. france looked out of sorts as italy dictated play in the 1st half, and had plentiful of possession.

the 2nd half was admittedly a france dominated half as they surged forth wave after wave to try and find the winner. but lady luck shone on them once again as a goal well taken by luca toni was ruled out for offside. off a andrea pirlo freekick, toni raced into the box to divert the freekick to the far post, way beyond the reach of barthez. luckily for them, toni was a touch offside and was penalised for tt.

the rest of the game swung end to end until zidane finally broke down. after being held back by materazzi during a corner for france, which was well cleared, he talks to materazzi who appears to dao him. b4 he suddenly launches a FULL-BLOODED HEADBUTT into materazzi's chest. a straight red for him. disgrace to the man retiring after his final world cup final.

yet... yet those idiot media heads who voted to decide who won the golden ball handed zidane the prestigious award.. by 50 odd votes zidane beat my favourite for the award cannavaro.. zidane was silent last night thanks to cannavaro's well marshalled defence. and yet cannavaro is the one who leaves with the world cup but without the golden ball award. INJUSTICE I TELL YOU the better man lost the award i felt.

well as for the other awards.. klose won golden shoe as top scorer, portugal won most entertaining team (which i agree, with ronaldo's dazzling step-overs, his awesome simulation skills and his crying antics. LOL apart frm tt i felt they played gd attacking football but lacked the vital finish), buffon won best goalkeeper (of course, given tt he has conceded only 1 own goal and 1 penalty, with no opponent scoring against him frm open play) and podolski the young player of the tournament. all these awards were at least justified. but the golden ball... consistency and determination lost to thuggery and mediocrity.

SHAME ON YOU VOTERS

semis

well truthfully speaking i dun like the semi-finalists of this yr's world cup, except for portugal. so i didnt really support any of the teams in their matches. i was quite happy italy beat germany, but on the reverse i dun really like them due to their snobbishness. well admittedly defensive teams are great. cannavaro and buffon were outstanding. pirlo was quite gd too, and marcelo lippi did his tactical job by bringing on del piero. so i think italy deserved to win.

well ok. i cant judge the 90mins cos i woke up in time for extra time to be kicked off. heard it was quite a defensive game, so many ppl fell aslp i think. so im lucky haha. well gilardino hit the post straight frm the kickoff after lax defending by the german defence. he ran past his marker, dribbled the ball along the by-line before cutting in and shooting. his near post shot visibly stunned lehmann as he only reacted when the ball had struck the post. lucky break for germany there.

then zambrotta crashed his shot against the crossbar after receiving the ball jus inside the area 4 mins later. so it set up a climatic finish where italy made up for their misses with 2 great goals. one frm grosso and the other frm del piero. grosso's was well worked. a poorly cleared italian corner falls to andrea pirlo, who drags wide lining up for a "shot" which he passed to an unmarked grosso who's curling volley beat lehmann jus inside the far post. brilliant goal.

then del piero confirmed the ticket to berlin with awesome counterattack move. with the germans committed to attack, a italian player snatches the ball back and quickly passes upfield, feeding gilardino in a 1 on 2 situation. spotting del piero's run frm behind, he calmly sidefooted into space. it was passed perfectly into del piero's path who chipped in a shot into the far corner as lehmann advanced. 2-0 italy with the last kick of the match.

well as for portugal against france, i felt bad tt figo fails to get his hands on a world cup winner's medal after a stellar career. his team fell unfortunately to a controversial penalty involving carvalho's tackle on henry. seemed like hardly any contact between the 2 players. but zidane and co doesnt care, as zidane thumped in a unstoppable shot tt ricardo could only get a finger to. i have to say ricardo is quite a gd penalty shot stopper. in the england match, he stopped 3 penalties, guessing all his saves right, although he was beaten by hargreaves, and tt becos it was a superb penalty. in contrast to england's robinson, who was a spectator.

yupz and tt settled tt match. portugal had the better chances but couldnt convert. so its italy vs france in the final, germany to take on portugal in search for 3rd place honours. sad for figo, a sensational setting for zidane to end his career. but i secretly think italy will show their defensive and tactical prowess once again, and i consider them favourites to win the final. with 4 golden ball nominees in buffon, cannavaro, pirlo and one more (cant rmb), they sure have an edge. wont predict score tho, jus expect a tight game (as the pundits always say, LOL =D)

oh lucas podolski won fifa young player of the tournament i think (dunno the exact title of the award, some gillete blah blah blah award). a bit surprising i think. expected some more established name to impress. cristiano ronaldo, messi, fabregas, barnetta were also nominated with ronaldo winning the internet poll. but a technical panel awarded it to podolski due to ronaldo's diving antics, which i think is rather embarassing. so i think he doesnt deserve the award. felt tt messi would have been my next choice, but i think podolski played more and scored more, so the technical panel chose him i guess.

yupz all tts left of the world cup is the 3rd 4th placing match and of course the final. expect record lvls of lateness for assembly on mon as well as quite a no. of students falling aslp in cls.

all hype, no substance

well watched argentina vs germany 2 days ago. undoubtedly the most intriguing match of this yr's world cup quarterfinals. the match ended 1-1 after extra time, with lehmann pulling off 2 penalty saves to send germany thru with a 4-2 shootout win.

apparently the game didnt start the way i had liked it to. both games came out very cautiously, with the germans launching shots frm outside the box and the argentinians failing to muster a single shot in the 1st half. the germans didnt show their brand of fast attacking football, and the argentina didnt show their full passing flair, perhaps due to the tight german defence. however carlos tevez created some interesting plays to give some chances for his teammates, who fail to connect well with his passes, resulting in the ball sky rocketing well over the bar. however they showed more promise.

after the restart their patience were paid off with a roberto ayala header off a corner. i felt it was particularly embarassing for the germans as they were the taller side and shld be able to deal with aerial threats better. yet argentina showed how to score against taller opponents - rely on fast and short players to run into space and the corner kick taken with inch perfect precision to tt space. ayala's header was powered in between lehmann and phillip lahm, giving them no chance.

but after tt it was all germany all the way. i felt argentina was a disappointment after their goal. they were delighted to jus sit back and let germany attack. whats more appalling was pekerman's substitutions. riquelme gave way for cambiasso, a defensive player, and crespo made way for cruz, undoubtedly to give him a run. so arrogant i tell you. with abt 15 mins left and you do tt. totally no respect for the germans. how they punished the argentinians in the 80th min with a well taken goal. klose with a close range header.

extra time was a bore as both sides were physically drained. then came lehmann heroics in the shootout. admittedly pekerman had alr screwed the team's shootout chances as well by taking off riquelme and crespo. tactical disaster for pekerman in my opinion.

right watched yesterday's match b/w england and portugal. personally was rooting for portugal although they were missing deco and costinha. i prefer portugal's brand of football to tt of the english. well admittedly the match was very contrasting to my expectations. no goals were scored frm open play and penalties had to settle it. also portugal was ok in attack but lacked the vital killer instinct. despite rooney being red carded, england only came to life after tt incident. they proved the more incisive side but lacked the finishing to capitalise on the numerous gd chances they had. after duelling for so long with no results to show for it, penalties it is, with ricardo pulling off 3 penalty saves against lampard, gerrard and carragher. portugal had their scares as well, as viana and someone missing their penalties, one blasting over and the other against the post. but ultimately the penalties by postiga and ronaldo settled the affair after 5 kicks. so as expected portugal progress. hat trick for scolari over sven.

well in other quarterfinal matches, italy beat ukraine 3-0 to advance comfortably to face hosts germany. as for brazil vs france, thierry henry's goal in the 57th min off a zidane freekick proved the difference between the 2 sides, with the samba kings crashing out somewhat expectedly given their mediocre performances so far.

the semis are on at wednesday. finally i can ditch crappy chinese software for quality tv feed as channel 5 decides to show the matches frm the semis onwards. the preview channel will also show the 3rd 4th placing match as well. =)

world fever is reaching its climax. by the looks of it, it'll be france vs germany in the final. germany will beat italy as they're the better attacking side and they have home ground advantage. france is more likely beat portugal as portugal is toothless in attack. perhaps deco's reintroduction may help.

2nd round

yea well with the quarter finals kicking off tml with germany vs argentina, abt time report on the results of the 2nd round.

germany vs sweden 2-0 lucas podolski 2-goal blitz in the opening 10 mins settles the contest. henrik larsson misses a 2nd half penalty to cap a disappointing performance by the swedes.

argentina vs mexico 2-1 rafael marquez scored early to stun the favourites. but hernan crespo quickly restored parity 4 mins later off a corner kick. stayed 1-1 till extra time when maxi rodriguez produced a sublime dipping volley frm the edge of the area to end the mexicans' challenge in the 98th min. simply a gem of a goal.

england vs ecuador 1-0 beckham's 60th min free kick settled this essentially dull defensive affair. another disappointing defensive performance by england.

portugal vs netherlands 1-0 a referreeing farce. a record 4 red cards and 16 yellows were shown. portugal's costinha and deco given marching orders, while the dutch saw van bronkhorst and khalid boulahrouz having an early shower. a classy maniche 23rd min goal settled this otherwise aggressive display of soccer thugs.

italy vs australia 1-0 australia crash out unluckily at the hands of a injury time penalty tt was controversial. francesco totti doesnt care as he smashes home the unlikely winner after materrazzi had himself sent off early in the 2nd half.

switzerland vs ukraine 0-0 0-0 after extra time, penalties settled it. the swiss became the 1st team to nt score a single penalty in a shootout as they crashed out 3-0.

brazil vs ghana 3-0 ghana essentially dominated possession but were undone by brazil's effective counters that led to all 3 of their goals. ronaldo, adriano and ze roberto completed the comprehensive counterattacking display with 3 beautiful and fast counters. ronaldo broke gerd muller's all time world cup finals scoring record with his 5th min goal.

france vs spain 3-1 in a battle of the old vs the up and coming, the old won. emphatically as well in the dying mins of the game. david villa had given the spaniards the lead thru a penalty but frank ribery equalised in the 41st min. it set the stage for a pulsating finish as viera scored in the 83rd min and zidane completed a wonderful night for the Les Bleus with a sensational strike with almost no time left.

yupz tts it. germany vs argentina, tantalising match i tell you. well i personally favour argentina and their slick passing, but germany are a threat too. hard to tell who will win it. i expect riquelme, sorin and messi to star for argentina and perhaps win it for them. hope so.

ok cya!

czech anguish

well jus finished tracking the czech republic vs italy match. admittedly i personally preferred the czechs as i have a bias against italy, who in my opinion are the snobs of football, especially francesco totti. but it was nt to be for pavel nedved and company. they went 1-0 down at the 26th min to a marco matterazzi goal. they didnt help themselves by having a player sent off for a 2nd bookable offence. the 2nd half was mainly 1 way traffic as the italians searched for the final nail in the czech's coffin. and they got it through fillipo inzaghi at the 70-something min.

pavel nedved gave his all i think for this world cup. yet it was nt to be. so passes the czechs' "golden generation" in my opinion, with so many top class veterans like nedved, jan koller, all playing their first and last world cup. sadly it was nt to be for the czechs. they promised so much at the start of the campaign with a 3-0 win over the us. but soon found themselves in some trouble with a 2-0 loss to ghana. and finally this 2-0 loss to italy. sad in my opinion. >.<

well long time nv updated this blog on the world cup so i shall display all the key results.

Group A
Germany beat Ecuador 3-0 with a brace frm miroslav klose and a goal frm podolski.
Poland beat Costa Rica 2-1 to go out with some pride intact.

Group B
England draw 2-2 with sweden to progress top of the group.
Paraguay defeat Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 to exit the tournament on a high.

Group C
Argentina and the Dutch play out a listless goalless draw to progress together.
Ivory Coast comes frm 2 goals down to win 3-2 against Serbia and Montenegro to prove tt their "best African team at the world cup" tag was at least justified.

Group D
Portugal beat Mexico 2-1 despite fielding Team B. Omar Bravo missed a penalty and a one-on-one situation, missing the opportunity to level the match.
Angola and Iran draw 1-1 to end their respective World Cup hopes.

Group E
Italy beat the Czech republic 2-0 to progress to the knockout stages.
Ghana beat the US 2-1 through a controversial penalty tt Stephen Appiah converted in the 1st half stoppage time.

Fixtures to come
Brazil vs Japan (later today)
Australia vs Croatia (later today)
Switzerland vs South Korea (tml i think)
France vs Togo (tml also)
Spain vs Saudi Arabia (sat)
Ukraine vs Tunisia (sat)

well after the 1st round performances so far, we can see some teams establishing themselves as hot favourites to win this year's world cup. they include: argentina, germany, netherlands. teams tt have nt yet proven their hype are: england and brazil. surprise qualifiers for the 2nd round are undoubtedly ghana so far. at the expense of the czechs. haiz.

yupz cya around. so upcoming developments on this blog include the setting up of my radio blog! lol its jus a utility for u to listen to my favourite music without long dl times. so stay tuned. =)

argentinian masterclass

cambiossa celebrating his goal with his teammates

what a performance. 6-0 argentina. GOSH. argentina sends a convincing warning to world cup aspirants - BE AFRAID, VERY AFRAID

indeed argentina demolished S&M thoroughly, in every department. 11 men vs 10 men(kezman got sent off for a 2 footed challenge), S&M is nv going to beat a argentinian side brimming with creative and potent players. young players carlos tevez and lionel messi combined to create and score the last 3 goals, with maxi rodigues and cambiossa scoring a brace and 1 respectively in the 1st half. simply awe-inspiring stuff i tell u.

even based on the commentators description on soccernet gamecast i could tell what an awesome match it was. thorough humiliation on S&M's part. argentina could pass 20-30 times b4 the serbs could get their feet on the ball. argentina's riquelme was even more flambuoyant, pulling backheel passes that actually led to goals, and even nutmegging mateja kezman with conspicuous ease. if i was a serb player on the field, i would have dove for cover as i wouldnt want to be on the field at tt time. superb stuff.

messi and tevez were also captivating. helping argentina double their advantage in the last 13 mins with messi assisting crespo, tevez curling one home and then assisting messi in a goal of his own. within mins of their substitutions. woah man.

argentina for the final i tell you. Posted by Picasa

breathtaking

ok we're in the thick of the world cup already. everyday there's 3 matches to watch so its impossible for me to comment on all. yea well ive nt watched much football though, after the opening game and the mexico vs iran match. limited to looking at live text. LOL if ur poor like me but wanna noe what's going on during a match live, jus go www.soccernet.com. they provide quite a comprehensive live text feedback. =)

yup lets see.. so far the important fixtures tt have passed..

england beats paraguay 1-0 (paraguayan OG off a beckham free kick)
argentina beats ivory coast 2-1 (errr dunno who scored haha)
brazil beats croatia 1-0 (Kaka (or is it me?) scores a beauty of a goal. Yea. =D)
spain thrashes ukraine 4-0 (xabi alonso header, david villa brace, fernando torres strike)
germany edges out poland 1-0 (oliver neuville stabbing home the last gasp goal in the 91st min)

hmmm tts all i rmb. i watched live feed of the spain vs ukraine match though. wah wished tt i could watch tt match. 4 goals. woo hoo. so far those matches tt ive watched at goal feasts. germany vs costa rica had 6 goals, mexico vs iran had 4 goals. judging by the commentators, spain really overran ukraine who looked out of sorts. tt is until david villa was subbed for the out of form raul gonzalez. damn. i was hoping to see the tournament's 1st hat trick from villa, but the idiotic coach sent on raul, of all people. zzzz out of form still wanna play huh.

but looking at the statistics it looked kinda sad for the ukraine. the ref seems to be against them all the way. heres a look at some stats.

offsides spain 0 ukraine 8 (heard tt some of which were furiously disputed)
yellow cards spain 0 ukraine 2 (both defenders i think)
red cards spain 0 ukraine 1 (a defender for a 2nd bookable offense, but on replay i felt it was very harsh. in the straits times reporter's own words, "he got sent off for testing the elasticity of torres' shorts" LOL cant help but laugh at that. yea he only tugged torres' shorts slightly, and off he goes. haiz penalty somemore)
penalties spain 1 ukraine 0 (of course spain's penalty came frm the above incident. ukraine had some credible penalty claims turned down too. david villa smashes home spain's penalty for a 3-0 lead)

seems biased right? well... haiz shant comment too much since i nv watched the match. oh and another thing ive noticed abt world cup matches is tt it seems that the refs are brandishing their reds quite often. quite a no. i think. poland, ukraine, togo and trinidad and tobago all had 1 man sent off. wow. 3 defenders and 1 midfielder. serious offenses cant occur so often right? tts like 1 red card every other day. hmmm

yupz tts all for today. tonights matches include england vs trinidad and tobago, ecuador vs costa rica, sweden vs paraguay. shall observe the 2nd match. cya next time!
